Learn Mandarin online - Nadal plays his best on grass to beat Youzhny

Sports / Tennis

Nadal plays his best on grass to beat Youzhny

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-06 09:17

Rafael Nadal produced his best performance on grass as he fought back to
beat Russian Mikhail Youzhny 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 and reach the
quarter-finals at Wimbledon on Thursday.

"I have never played so well on grass," said the second seed, who will
meet seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in the last eight on Friday.

Nadal, runner-up last year, struggled to find his rhythm for two sets
after his third-round match against Swede Robin Soderling, a five-setter
which was on the Saturday schedule but did not conclude until Wednesday.

Youzhny initially played near flawless tennis, finding the corners and
hitting fine volleys at the net, before being hampered by a long-standing
back problem.

"Another line", Nadal cursed under his breath after an ace from Youzhny
in the second set, a resigned reaction to the precision in the Russian's
game.

Youzhny, who had twice beaten Nadal in the last 12 months, took the first
set on his first break point of the match after a rare double fault from
the Spaniard and broke again two games into the second after a superb
backhand crosscourt winner.

ROLE REVERSAL

The roles were dramatically reversed from the start of the third set
which Nadal raced through in 27 minutes after breaking Youzhny to go 2-0
up.

The Russian, who pulled out of last month's Halle tournament with a back
problem, then asked for courtside treatment.

"Throughout the third set I thought about calling for the physio... but
that would have been a motivation for Nadal," the 14th seed told a news
conference.

"It's tough, because it looks like I can do everything but I couldn't
move like I did in the first and second sets," added Youzhny, who could
no longer chase every Nadal effort with the same vigour as he had done
early in the match.

There was the threat of a rain interruption when the score was 1-1 and
30-30 in the fourth set but it did not materialise and Youzhny again
asked for the physiotherapist in the break when Nadal led 3-2.

"The key was my determination. I was more aggressive," said Nadal, whose
turn it had become to find the corners with almost monotonous regularity,
also notching up a match tally of 11 aces while Youzhny won only two more
games.

Learn Mandarin online - Stressed mole-rats hold clues to human infertility

Stressed mole-rats hold clues to human infertility

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-01 16:39

LONDON - A bizarre hairless rodent living underground in Africa may offer
clues about the links between stress and human infertility, scientists
said on Monday.

Stressed-out mole-rats become infertile after constant bullying by the
colony's "queen", the only female to reproduce. But this infertility is
reversible and when the queen dies, a previously non-breeding female
quickly takes her place.

Chris Faulkes, a biologist at the University of London, believes the
animals' behaviour patterns translate into suppression of certain
fertility hormones and understanding the process could help explain
stress-related infertility in humans.

"Similar things might be happening in humans," he said in a telephone
interview. "It's likely that it is all acting on similar pathways in the
brain."

Stress has long been known to be an important factor in infertility in
both women and men -- but working out why is a challenge.

Faulkes, who is presenting his mole-rat research at the annual meeting of
the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Lyon,
France, is convinced animals can provide part of the answer.

The example of the subterranean rodent, which lives in colonies of
between 100 and 300 animals, is extreme and the ability of the mole-rat
queen to dominate other individuals by shoving them around is unusual.

But the blind creatures are far from alone in managing fertility within a
social group. Other creatures exhibiting socially-induced reproductive
suppression include primates like marmosets and tamarins, mongooses, and
members of the dog family, such as wolves and jackals.

In the case of the mole-rats, it appears that ovulatory cycles in females
are suppressed by reduction of luteinising and follicle stimulating
hormones, while testosterone and sperm count levels fall in non-breeding
males.

Faulkes and his colleagues are also researching the role that genes may
play in different forms of social bonding and mating patterns.

"By making careful comparisons with model species like mole-rats, we may
be able to tease apart the relative contribution of genes, environment,
upbringing and culture to complex social behaviour in our own species,"
he said.

Firstborn sons have higher IQ - study

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-22 09:12

WASHINGTON - Firstborn sons have higher IQs than their younger brothers,
and their social status within the family may explain why, researchers
reported on Thursday.

A study that used military draft records for more than 240,000 Norwegian
men found that firstborns had an edge of 2.3 IQ points on their next
oldest brothers, who in turn beat brothers born third by 1.1 points on
average.

Men who had been raised as the eldest, whether they were born first,
second, or third, had IQs to match their first-born peers. The same was
true for those raised or born second, Petter Kristensen and colleagues at
the University of Oslo report in the journals Science and Intelligence.

"This study provides evidence that the relation between birth order and
IQ score is dependent on the social rank in the family and not birth
order as such," Kristensen's team wrote in Science.

Their studies confirmed what many scientists had suspected for more than
a century - that firstborns have an edge.

But attempts to prove the effect have been disputed, in part because the
circumstances of each family are different.

To compensate for this, Kristensen's team studied brothers raised in the
same families.

And some scientists argue that birth order IQ differences arise in the
womb, while others point to family interactions.

To distill potential biological effects from social effects, Kristensen's
team dug up the young mens' family birth records and found families whose
first-born or first- and second-born children had died before the age of
one year.

Larger share of family resource?

That was when they discovered that it was not birth order so much as
growing up as the eldest of the children in a family that made the
difference.

Kristensen said the findings fit with most existing theories about why
merely being older might affect someone's IQ.

Various researchers have suggested that older siblings might benefit from
a larger share of family resources, the process of tutoring their younger
brothers and sisters, or from expectations placed on their social rank.

"Things like intellectual resources (and) stimulation from the parents to
the child seem to be very important," Kristensen said in a telephone
interview.

The findings swayed even skeptics of the theory that birth order affects
intelligence.

"Birth order has been studied in relation to everything you can think
of," said Joe Rodgers, a professor of psychology at the University of
Oklahoma who was not involved in the research.

He said he was impressed that Kristensen's team was able to document a
2.3-point difference in IQ in such a large group.

"An awful lot of parents would pay money if their kids could increase IQ
by two real IQ points," Rodgers said in a telephone interview.

The IQ differences were larger in brothers born into smaller families,
and to married women with higher education. But the effect seems to
vanish with greater age gaps between siblings, Kristensen's team wrote in
the journal Intelligence.

It is unclear what the gap means for individual families, and if it can
be found outside this population of young Norwegian men.

"I don't think it would surprise anyone that life is different in Norway
than it is in the United States," Rodgers said.

However, "there is no reason to suspect that this should not be valid
concerning women as well as men," Kristensen said.

He said he would be interested to see how siblings compare in cultures in
which extended family members live together.

Arab foreign ministers will hold an extraordinary meeting in Cairo on
Friday to discuss the violence in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, a league
official told AFP.

League headquarters in Cairo, 2006. Mussa called for an immediate halt to
deadly infighting in the Gaza Strip, warning of the danger it poses to
the Palestinian cause.[AFP]

"We will hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday to examine the situation
in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon," Hisham Yussef, Arab
League Secretary General Amr Mussa's chief of staff told AFP late
Wednesday.

Yussef said the meeting -- initially scheduled for Saturday -- had been
brought forward because of the severity of the situation.

On Wednesday, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora called for crisis
talks to discuss the murder of MP Walid Eido, a vocal critic of the
Syrian regime, who was killed along with his eldest son, two bodyguards
and six other people in a seafront bomb blast.

In the Gaza Strip, fierce gunbattles between loyalists of president
Mahmud Abbas' Fatah party and supporters of the Islamist Hamas movement
have killed more than 70 people in three days and were continuing in Gaza
City on Thursday.

Learn Chinese - 3 Turk soldiers killed in security zone

WORLD / Middle East

3 Turk soldiers killed in security zone

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-08 08:46

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Turkey's military command declared its "unshakable
determination" early Friday to defeat Kurdish separatists hours after a
roadside bomb killed three Turkish soldiers and wounded six.

Graphic shows locations of Turkey? temporary security zones near the
border with Iraq. [AP]
The attack Thursday evening occurred in one of several "temporary
security zones" that the military had just declared along the Iraq border
during its campaign against the guerrillas.

Authorities blamed the Kurdish rebels for the blast, which came amid
increasing activity by Turkish troops along the frontier that has fed
concerns the army might stage a large-scale offensive against rebel bases
in the predominantly Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Turkish leaders say guerrillas cross into Turkey to stage attacks in
their recently escalated fight to win autonomy for southeastern Turkey,
where ethnic Kurds make up much of the population.

In a statement on its Web site, the military's General Staff vowed to
fight the rebels and called on all Turks to stand together "to resist in
the face of these terrorist actions."

"The Turkish Armed Forces has an unshakable determination in fighting
terrorism and it will absolutely give the necessary answer to such
attacks," it said.

The bomb targeted a military vehicle near Siirt, a city 46 miles north of
the Iraq border, the governor's office said. It killed three soldiers and
wounded six other security personnel, including pro-government village
guards, the office said.

Turkey has grown increasingly frustrated with the rise in attacks by the
PKK rebel movement, and its leaders have sent more troops to the frontier
while publicly raising the possibility of sending the army into northern
Iraq.

On Wednesday, the military said it was establishing "temporary security
zones" near the border. The declaration came the same day that Turkish
security officials and an Iraqi Kurdish official said hundreds of Turkish
soldiers crossed the border pursuing guerrillas.

Turkey's foreign minister denied there was a cross-border operation.
Turkey is an ally of the United States, and US officials have argued
against an attack into Iraq, fearing that might drag its Iraqi Kurdish
allies into the conflict.

Some think Turkey may hope its military buildup will push the United
States and Iraqi Kurds to crack down on the separatists and head off a
Turkish offensive.

The military did not say what it meant by "temporary security zones."
Some Turkish media said the areas would be closed to civilian plane
flights, but others said additional security measures would be
implemented in the zones and entry would be restricted.

In a statement posted on its Web site, the military said the zones would
be in place until Sept. 9, but gave no other information.

Newspapers said the areas are in Sirnak, Siirt and Hakkari provinces.
Sirnak and Hakkari are next to the border, while Siirt is north of the
frontier. All three provinces have been the scene of fighting with
Kurdish rebels.

Some Turkish officials have said that if troops stage a major incursion
into Iraq, they might set up a buffer zone inside Iraq to try to stop
rebel infiltration.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, cautioned Turkey against such an
operation and urged cooperation.

"We ask almighty God to lead all of us to the way of dialogue and
negotiation to solve all questions," Talabani told reporters Thursday.
"There is a tripartite, American-Iraqi-Turkish committee that is
responsible for solving these matters."

Speaking as commander in chief of Iraq's military forces, he said the
Iraqi government would not accept foreign interference and "will defend
by all means its sovereignty and the independence of the nation."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said an incursion into
northern Iraq would require parliamentary approval.

Gen. Yasar Buyukanit, the military chief, said the army was ready for an
offensive but the decision was up to political leaders.

Chinese Lesson - EU to conduct military exercise

WORLD / Europe

EU to conduct military exercise

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-06-05 04:23

The European Union (EU) will conduct its second military exercise from
June 7-15, the EU Council announced in Brussels on Monday.

The exercise, in the framework of the European Security and Defense
Policy (ESDP), is a Command Post Exercise (CPX) and will focus on the key
military aspects of crisis management.

"No troops will be deployed," said a press release issued by the EU
Council Secretariat.

During the conduct of the exercise, the EU Operations Center ( EU
OpsCenter), composed of military and civilian elements, will be activated
for the first time.

This will be the second time for the EU to stage a military exercise.

The first military exercise ever staged by the EU, however, was conducted
in November 2005.

The exercise will focus on the interaction between the EU OpsCenter in
Brussels and an EU Force Headquarters (FHQ) in Enkoping of Sweden, in the
context of an autonomous EU-led military operation.

According to the EU Council, the exercise will be based on a newly
developed scenario called ALISIA that is being used for EU exercises
during the time frame from 2006 to 2010.

The scenario depicts a situation in a fictitious country ( Alisia), where
friction between the Transitional Government of Alisia and a rebel group
(National Freedom Movement) leads to a situation in which the deployment
of humanitarian aid to camps of internally displaced persons in the
North-Western part of the country is significantly hampered.

A UN mission already on the ground does not have sufficient capabilities
to address the situation.

Under the scenario, at the request of the UN, the EU has decided to
conduct an operation bridging the time needed for the UN to reorganize
its personnel. The EU operation will include the deployment of a force up
to 2000 personnel including an Integrated Police Unit, temporarily placed
under military responsibility.

The EU Council said some 200 "players" and supporting personnel are
expected to take part.

The exercise is carried out under the operational authority of the EU's
security policy chief Javier Solana. Lieutenant-General David Leakey is
the official conducting the exercise.

Chinese language - Bush pays tribute to fallen US troops

WORLD / America

Bush pays tribute to fallen US troops

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-29 08:33

ARLINGTON, Va. - President Bush on Monday honored US troops who have
fought and died for freedom and expressed his steely resolve to succeed
in the war in Iraq. "As before in our history, Americans find ourselves
under attack and underestimated," he said.

President Bush, left, lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, marking
Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2007, at Arlington National Cemetery in
Arlington, Va. [AP]

Bush marked his sixth Memorial Day as a wartime president with a somber
speech at Arlington National Cemetery. He said he hoped the United States
will always prove worthy of the sacrifices fallen troops have made, and
recognized the grief suffered by families and friends of troops killed in
war, most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"Now this hallowed ground receives a new generation of heroes - men and
women who gave their lives in places such as Kabul and Kandahar, Baghdad
and Ramadi," he said. "Like those who came before them, they did not want
war, but they answered the call when it came. They believed in something
larger than themselves. They fought for our country, and our country
unites to mourn them as one."

The president's motorcade was greeted at Arlington by scores of tourists
who waved at Bush. Just before his limousine crossed over the Potomac
River into Virginia, a man held up a sign saying, "Bring our troops home."

Members of the armed forces carrying rifles fitted with bayonets stood at
attention as Bush's motorcade wended its way through rows of white
tombstones marked with tiny American flags. Some soldiers were astride
horses that flinched when canons were fired, sending bluish white smoke
over the cemetery.

Bush spoke under overcast skies at a marble amphitheater after he laid a
wreath of red, white and blue flowers at the Tomb of the Unknowns and
stood, his hand over his heart, during a drum roll and the playing of
Taps. First lady Laura Bush watched the ceremony with relatives of fallen
troops.

Those who have died in the Civil War, World War I, World War II and
Vietnam conflicts fought for freedoms, which come at great cost and will
survive only as long as there are Americans willing to defend the nation
against determined enemies, he said.

"Our enemies long for our retreat," Bush said. "They question our moral
purpose. They doubt our strength of will. Yet even after five years of
war, our finest citizens continue to answer our enemies with courage and
confidence."

He noted that 174 Marines - nearly one-fourth of a battalion - recently
asked to have their enlistments extended.

"Those who serve are not fatalists or cynics," Bush said. "They know that
one day this war will end as all wars do. Our duty is to ensure that its
outcome justifies the sacrifices made by those who fought and died in it.

"From their deaths must come a world where the cruel dreams of tyrants
and terrorists are frustrated and foiled - where our nation is more
secure from attack, and where the gift of liberty is secured for millions
who have never known it."

At least 3,452 members of the US military have died since the beginning
of the war in Iraq in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
At least 325 members of the US military have died in Afghanistan,
Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the US invasion of Afghanistan in
late 2001, according to the Defense Department.

Yao's home fans welcome new coach

By Zhao Rui (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-05-22 08:43

Chinese fans have hailed the appointment of Rick Adelman as the new coach
of Houston Rockets, home of All-Star center Yao Ming.

The Rockets fired Jeff Van Gundy after the team lost to Utah Jazz 4-3 in
the first round of the NBA Playoffs earlier this month and announced it
has settled on Adelman as leading candidate.

against the Philadelphia 76ers in this Jan. 23, 2006 file photo in their
NBA basketball game in Philadelpia. [AP]

"The former head coach of Sacramento Kings had talks with Rockets chiefs
and is likely to take his new post in the coming days," Sohu.com reported
yesterday. "Van Gundy should be responsible for the humiliating setback
and Adelman is a good subtitute."

In a poll conducted by the website, 53 per cent of fans believe Adelman
is a better coach for the Rockets while only 37 per cent said they are
sorry for Van Gundy's exit.

"I support Adelman for sure," said Liu Ailin, a member of the Rockets
Fans Circle, a fan group in Beijing. "I like his fast style and outside
attack. This is obviously a great move, the Rockets played dull
basketball this season. They should be more passionate as they have the
best scorers in the league - Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. They should be
more successful than they were in the playoffs."

Adelman is reportedly Houston's only target since he met with Rockets
owner Leslie Alexander and general manager Daryl Morey last week. He has
met several times with Morey since.

Morey would not talk about Adelman specifically, but if hired, Adelman
would have the best career winning percentage of any Rockets coach.

Adelman, 60, is 752-481 in 16 seasons as an NBA coach, reaching the NBA
Finals with Portland in 1990 and 1992. He has a 70-68 postseason record.
He also would join Rudy Tomjanovich as the only former Rockets players to
become coach.

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander met with Rick Adelman, a former NBA coach,
last week following comments by Jeff Van Gundy, pictured April 2007, that
he might not return to guide the Rockets, the Houston Chronicle reported
Wednesday. [AP]

Adelman took Sacramento to the Western Conference finals in the 2001-02
season, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in overtime of Game 7. He was
fired as Kings coach after the 2005-06 season and did not coach last
season.

Van Gundy himself said Adelman is the first choice to replace him.

"He is a great coach and an even better man," Van Gundy said. "They'll
have tremendous coaching coupled with a group of very, very good,
hard-playing professional players. Hopefully, they'll break through next
year."

However, there was some sympathy for the departed coach.

"I will miss him, we shouldn't deny him just because we lost to the Jazz
in the first round," said Luo Qi, a Rockets fan in Nanjing, Jiangsu
Province. "The team chemistry was good and the players were playing hard.
The Rockets just need a few more pieces to complete the roster to be the
top team in the league."

Despite playing without Yao and McGrady or both for more than half the
season, the Rockets finished 52-30, their best record in 10 years.

Van Gundy is 430-318 in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, the best career
winning percentage of any of the Rockets' 10 previous coaches. His
182-146 record in four seasons with the Rockets is second only to Rudy
Tomjanovich.

NEW YORK - The time of year a woman conceives may influence the future
academic performance of her child, according to research reported this
week at the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meeting.

When researchers linked standardized test scores of 1,667,391 Indiana

been conceived, they found that children conceived May through August
scored significantly lower on math and language tests than children
conceived during other months of the year.

The correlation between test scores and conception season held regardless
of race, gender, and grade level.

Why might this be? According to Dr. Paul Winchester of Indiana University
School of Medicine who led the study, says the evidence points to
environmental pesticides, used most often in the summer months, as a
possible player.

The lower test scores correlated with higher levels of pesticides and
nitrates in the surface water (nearby streams and other bodies of water)
during that same time period, he told Reuters Health.

"Exposure to pesticides and nitrates can alter the hormonal milieu of the
pregnant mother and the developing fetal brain," Winchester explained in
a statement. For example, past research has linked exposure to pesticides
and nitrates to low thyroid hormone levels ("hypothyroidism") in pregnant
women and hypothyroidism in pregnancy has been tied to lower intelligence
test scores in offspring.

While the current findings do not prove that pesticides and nitrates
contribute to lower test scores, "they strongly support such a
hypothesis," Winchester said.

"A priori there should be no reasons particularly why the month of
conception should change your (test) scores," he added in an interview,
"and yet from our chain of evidence our hypothesis was that if pesticides
do alter the friendly environment of the developing fetus than that might
be reflected in lower scores. And unfortunately that's what we found."

"There is something going on" and it needs to be studied further,
Winchester concluded.
