I am looking for some good suggestion for books that are easy to read for beginners with a limited
character knowledge.

Best are probably something graded. But I don't really want to go for primary childrens books.

Any suggestion is welcome.

PS: what is http://www.shuku.net - they have lot's of online reading stuff, but is not graded.

Flameproof, in the following thread you asked me to make some comments on graded beginners reading
material:
http://www. From Beijing Chinese School/showth...t=15934&page=2
Now here they are. Since you don't want to go for children’s books, I will not give the relevant
links to you, although I think some of them are interesting.

How about these books?

Elina, I think the titles for the "Chinese Fast Reading" series have been mistranslated. For
example, shouldn't this one below be 5000 words instead of 5000 characters (词, not 字)? 5000
characters would be a lot even for native Chinese.

Also maybe you can list the table of content for these books. It would be helpful to know what the
subject matters of the reading materials are.

http://www.lovemandarin.com/book.asp?id=3454
Chinese Fast Reading: A Step-by-Step Approach (5000 Characters in the fifth level)
汉语阶梯快速阅读(第五级5000词级)

flameproof, maybe you can try this one. The table of content's not listed, but it sounds like a
book of jokes in Chinese intended for beginners who know about 1500 words. The accompanying CD has
audio of the readings.

elina -

Gato, you’re right about the books’ titles, we have corrected them now. Thank you very much!
Sometimes, the publishers don’t give the English names of the books, and we have to translate
them by ourselves. You can imagine it’s a hard task for us who only have poor English level.

You’re also right to suggest that we should add the 目录/ catalogs to the books, which is what
we want to do. Now some of our books already have catalogs, for examples:

Chinese Fast Reading: A Step-by-Step Approach (1750 Words in the second level)
http://www.lovemandarin.com/book.asp?id=3451

Chinese Fast Reading: A Step-by-Step Approach (2500 Words in the third level)
http://www.lovemandarin.com/book.asp?id=3452

Chinese Fast Reading: A Step-by-Step Approach (3500 Words in the fourth level)
http://www.lovemandarin.com/book.asp?id=3453

In addition, we also want to add 内容页节选/ selected pages to the books. There’re several
thousands of books on our site, please give us some time to accomplish it. And thank you again for
your valuable advices!

flameproof -

Thanks a lot to you too! That will keep me busy for a few month!

I checked also this link just now from the "when to learn characters" threat:

http://www.yale.edu/fep/catalog/mirror2.html

There are a few more good suggestions in there...

Today I went to Book City in Shenzhen. Their "for "外国人" selection is rather small. And no
"readers" at all. Just study material.

Since I don't wanted to leave empty handed I finally checked the children section and bought a
story book for primary kids. I think it's OK for now and me.

Interesting side note: The book I chose has many short stories (so far nothing special), but some
uncommon characters in the text have the pinyin after it in brackets.

Will take some time to check all those links and books........ Thanks again!

shuizhuniurou -

Maybe this is too basic for you, but when I was studying Mandarin, I found that comic books, Rin
Tin Tin, Calvin & Hobbes, etc were really great practice. A lot of repetition, some new words and
practical for dialogues (well, if you like to sound like these characters I guess) and I could
finish the strips or stories in a short time - where as reading a book would take so long (using
the dictionary again and again and coming across grammar that was way beyond my level) that I
would quickly grow bored of it. Brought Dan Brown's Angels and Demons back to the states for
practice - way over my head. Magazines were great while I was in China - read one similar to Maxim
- an article, especially an interesting one is a much better read - brief, may learn something
fun, and quite different than the usual textbook variety. Wish I'd loaded up before I came back.

flameproof -

shuizhuniurou
Thanks. I moved on a little. I found http://clavisinica.com/CVP/voices.html a little frustrating.
Even after translating it, incl. all the double character meanings, I can not catch the meaning.
Still need a local to explain it to me.

I had no chance to look at the other suggestions give. But I will be in Shanghai after next week
and will go to the Fuzhou Lu Book Shop (or any better options??)

Anyway, me, too eager to wait, went to a bookshop in Shenzhen and bought this one:

http://www.haoplus.com/1-book/261411.html

It's a short story book for primary children, maybe for 9 year olds. It's easier to understand.
Still need to look up many, many characters. However, it's getting a little easier by the day.

Tintin / 丁丁 is a good idea too! Actually I got one in simplified Chinese! 丁丁 在美国,
but for now I will stick to my primary book, the stories are really a little funny and enjoyable.
I try to do one in a day or two.

I will keep on with that. It's quite encouraging to notice the own progress.

PS: I know, there is also learning material, but I tend to find it boring before I even look at
it. It carries a stigma....

roddy -

Been said before on here a few times, but joke books are a good place to look. They're bite-sized
pieces of text, always simple narrative, and one in about a hundred are actually funny.

flameproof -

Quote:

joke books are a good place to look.

You mean as in written jokes? Not comix, right? I think if they play with the language I have not
chance to understand it.

Next time in the book shop I need to grab an 8 year old and let him find something for me...

roddy -

There will be some puns, but still plenty you should be able to follow. What's "What would the
circus want with a frog?" in Chinese?

36th Scientific Assembly of COSPAR begins in Beijing

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-18 17:07:32

Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan delivers a speech on the opening
ceremony of the 36th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space
Research (COSPAR) in Beijing, on July 17, 2006. (Xinhua Photo)

July 18 - Outer space is the shared resource of human beings.
Exploration, peaceful utilization and development of outer space are
rights of all nations throughout the world, Chinese President Hu Jintao
said here Monday.
Society also share the responsibility of maintaining a peaceful and clean
space, he said in a congratulatory letter sent to the 36th Scientific
Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) which began on
Monday in Beijing.
In his letter, Hu said humans have traveled a long path in exploring
space and had made fruitful achievements.
In the past half century, mankind has grown to understand the environment
of space, studied planets in the solar system and more precisely
explained cosmic origins and evolution of the galaxy. All those
achievements have pushed forward human society, Hu said.
Human society is expecting to witness new breakthroughs in space science
and technology in the 21st century, Hu said.
Advancement of space science will further improve the human ability to
understand, utilize and explore the universe, he said.
As an important international scientific organization, Hu said, the
COSPAR has contributed to international cooperation in space science. The
Chinese government supports activities sponsored by the COSPAR and is
willing to enhance friendly cooperation with the COSPAR.
Hu said he believes with concerted efforts by people all over the world
and the scientific community, space science is going to have a bright
future and benefit the whole of society

Nine Chinese companies enter into NASDAQ global select market

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-30 16:56:54

Chinanews, Jun. 30 C The NASDAQ Stock Exchange will launch its Global
Select Market next Monday. The Global Select Market is considered as one
with the highest acceptance criterion. About 1,200 companies in the world
meet the strict requirement of the new sector. According to the China
Securities Journal, nine Chinese companies, including Netease, Sina,
Ctrip, Sohu, Tom Online, Shanda, 51job, and China Medical Technology are
listed on the new sector.
Chinese search engine Baidu, which some analysts predicted would enter
the select market, did not show on the list.
The NASDAQ Global Select Market places sets forth a much higher
requirement for a company's financial status and its money circulation.
Entering on the list can thus be considered as an indication of a
company's high quality and its great achievement.
In separate news, the Securities Times reported that chairman of the
NASDAQ International Department Charlotte Crosswell said in an interview
in April that over the past two years, sixteen Chinese companies had been
able to go public on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. If China could maintain
such growing speed in the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, it would mean that
within a couple of years China would surpass Israel to become NASDAQ's
largest overseas market, said Mr. Crosswell.
At present, most Chinese companies are traded in the NASDAQ National
Market sector. Since many companies outside the United States are traded
in this market, the NASDAQ National Market will change into the NASDAQ
Global Market on July 3 when its Global Select Market is put into effect.
At present, about 1,450 companies traded in the NASDAQ Stock Exchange
will be grouped into the NASDAQ Global Market.

China faces pressure on IPR earlier than expected

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-20 10:17:32

(Source: Xinhua)

June 20 - China has faced international pressure on its handling of
intellectual property rights (IPR) five to ten years earlier than
predicted, a senior Chinese IPR governor has said.
"More and more Chinese companies have come under pressure from IPR issues
with the rapid economic development in the country," Tian Lipu, director
of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), said at a meeting on
IPR protection.
Among the 111 complaints the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC)
had lodged under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, 42 were against
Chinese enterprises, said Tian.
Under Section 337, imported products that allegedly violate U.S. IPR can
be barred from entry into the United States. Complaints under Section 337
are made to the USITC and generally involve allegations of infringement
of patents, trademarks or copyrights.
Patent payment and the amount of compensation foreign companies have
claimed was increasing, Tian said. Chinese companies had paid three
billion yuan (375 million U.S. dollars) for DVD production.
A growing number of industries were involved in IPR disputes, from
lighter and pen manufacturing to bio-pharmacy and computer chip
production, he said. Patent suits lodged by foreign companies were
threatening the economic security of certain Chinese industries.
"Domestic companies must strengthen their IPR awareness, improve their
innovative capacities and be active in patent applications at home and
abroad," he warned. "When facing lawsuits, they should heed domestic and
international laws on IPR."
"Almost all medical instruments, semiconductors, integrated circuit and
optic fiber manufacturing equipment, 80 percent of petrochemical
equipment and 70 percent of car manufacturing, advanced textile
production and offset equipment in China are imported," a SIPO official
who declined to be named told Xinhua on Monday
A major television set and cellphone manufacturing country, China
depended on more than half of the key technologies of the two products
owned by multinational corporations.
"We must pay royalties for a personal computer, a DVD player and even a
mouse," the official said.

Hospitalized pets enjoyed music

A vet was playing the keyboard to comfort pets on June 8. Zhang Xiao, vet
in a pet clinic in Chongqing's Yongchuan City, played the keyboard and
sang songs so as to calm those pets that were doing a transfusion. The
nervous pets immediately became quiet after listening to the music.

In a ravine on Mutougou of the Flaming Mountain in Turpan, Xinjiang
Autonomous Region, a natural canyon about 60 meters long, 80 meters high
and 0.5 to 1.3 meters wide was discovered in mid-May. This canyon is
serpentine inside and only wide enough for one person to walk through. It
is the narrowest canyon ever found on the Flaming Mountain. It was
learned that this canyon divides a range of the Flaming Mountain into two
parts. It came into existence after thousands of years of scour by water.

gathered in Zhejiang's Hangzhou Botanical Garden on May 14 during a
garden party and Han culture promotion activity which focused on honoring
Han etiquette, playing the zither, chanting poems and talking about
contemporary heroes while drinking wine. They taught newcomers how to
make a Han salute and publicized Han culture and costumes to tourists.
Amidst sounds of zither and aroma of wine, those Han culture fans chanted

PBOC denounces report on US$900b bad loan

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-12 09:33:49

(Source: Xinhua)

May 12 - The People's Bank of China denounced Thursday a report by an
unidentified overseas accounting company which said that the bad loan of
China's commercial banks reached US$900 billion.
An official with the People's Bank said that the company has for a long
time been engaged in accounting and auditing business in China. The so
called research report has largely distorted the fact of the capital
quality of Chinese banks, and drawn ridiculous conclusions.
He said that China's national economy has maintained stable and rapid
development, which is creating a healthy environment for thefinancial
sector.
He said the Chinese government has adopted measures to prevent financial
risks, including reforming the financial mechanism, strengthening
financial supervision, introducing an open-up policy and establishing a
modern enterprise system. Therefore, China's financial industry achieved
remarkable progress in risk management and the banks' capital quality has
been improved.
According to the official, by the end of March this year, the bad loan of
China's commercial banks has kept reducing. The total volume of bad loans
was 1312.47 billion yuan (US$164 billion), down 13.76 billion yuan
compared with the beginning of this year. The rate of bad loan was eight
percent, down 0.6 percent compared with the beginning of this year.
